Paton-Churdan has set Saturday, June 13, as the date for commencement for the Class of 2020, with an alternate date of Sunday, July 12. The ceremony will be held at 2 pm in the school gymnasium.
Greene County Schools have set Sunday, June 28, as the tentative date. According to information provided Tuesday to students and parents/guardians by superintendent Tim Christensen, plans are tentative and will depend on future guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control, the Iowa Department of Public Health, and Gov Kim Reynolds.
The voluntary educational enrichment program at Greene County will continue through May 29. “We highly encourage all students to take part in this learning. Participation will give students the best chance to be successful when we return to school in the fall,” Christensen said.
He also provided information for moving into the 2020-21 school year.
All students in grades PK-8 will be promoted to the next grade level. According to Christensen, strong research shows no long-lasting benefits to children. “As we have always done, we will take each child where they are and work with them to improve their skills from there,” he said.
Teachers will discuss what content was missed due to the shortened school year and make sure students receive that content in the fall. The only students who will be considered for retention will be those who were already being considered before the early close of school.
Students in grades 9-11 will receive credit for the courses in which they were enrolled for the third trimester, but they’ll receive a “passing” grade which not impact their grade point average. Students may retake a class they started during the third trimester. In that case, they’ll receive a grade for the class that will be calculated into their GPA. The course that was shortened will be changed to an elective credit.
Students and parents were sent information about prerequisites needed for further courses.
